KA OKE'A "ALUALUA - The Old Rugged Cross
The greatest gift for Jerry was that he was raised close to his late grandfather, James Henry Potter Sr. , also known as Kimo. Kimo was not known as an artist nor did he consider himself as an artist. He was considered by most as a storyteller. He had the gift of bringing different hawaiian woods which he gathered from the forest (roots, branches, stomps) that resembled a cross, an animal or even a person, brought them home to dry, bark, sand, oil and finished into beautiful natural pieces. And with every piece came a story told like an old Hawaiian storyteller. Being a part of his grandfathers process, it inspired Jerry to tell the story of each bowl that he creates.
Jerry's grandfather told creative stories about his pieces, one of Jerry's favorites was a natural piece of kiawe branch created by nature that looked like a woman with a child attached to her leg. His grandfather told a lengthy story of how this women struggled as a young mother. He told stories with such a tone in his voice and facial expressions that captured Jerry's imagination. Jerry must have heard this story 100 times, and every time was like the first time he's heard it.
